Need a popular movement to combat the other “C”

Thank god, the citizens of India have finally come together to combat Corruption– the “C” that has been draining this great country of its potential to reach the very top. India is the 11th largest economy in the world and the 4th largest by purchasing power parity . If we can sustain the current growth of 9%, average income is expected to double in a few years and we are stated to be the 3rd largest economy very soon. However latest statistics show that the total money scrupulous elements have made through corruption over the years is USD 20.23 trillion. With this amount, we could have defeated most of our social problems like unemployment and poverty and we would have occupied our destined position in the international community much sooner.

Hope the current enthusiasm and excitement doesn’t die down and hope it will lead to some stringent and effective regulations that will help us eradicate this malaise, once and for all.

This said, we also urgently need a movement to combat the other “C” which also has the potential to put brakes on our ascent towards success. This is the “C” that can undo all the progress that we made till date and push us back into a un mountable death spiral of mayhem and chaos.

This “C” stands for Communalism…..

Steven Wilkinson, a US based Scholar who has been studying communal violence in India has concluded that since independence, the casualties in communal riots in India is as huge as 40,000. Bring the partition into this equation and the figure stands at 1.5 million – We have managed to kill many more of our own than what our enemies have. And by doing so, We have been doing a huge favor to all the ones who are desperate to destabilize us and see our doom.

The sad fact is that our Police force is fully equipped and capable of brining any riot under control within 24 hours. The major communal riots that cause higher casualties are pre-planned for days if not months and there are always early warnings of such a planning which the police and intelligence can easily know if they care. Hence it is obvious that all these riots that destroy our valuable human resources, our brand image and the precious climate of peace and co operation are successful only due to the nexus between riot entrepreneurs, politicians, enforcement agencies and the media.

About 31 Inquiry Commissions were appointed after various communal riots. These Inquiry Commissions have pointed out that riots take place as administration is complicit and fail to perform their duties on all three fronts – in taking preventive steps before riots, controlling the mobs during the riots and finally bringing the culprits to book.

Hatred, fear and communalism will not help our country. Neither numbers or mob strength will help any particular community. At the ease at which bombs can be made and explosions can be triggered, one single fanatic can kill hundreds. See what is happening to our neighbors. Their economy is in shambles. No one wants to invest there and the whole nation is staring at a bleak future. Let us not allow anyone to lead us to the same state. And let us hope that our neighbors also get cured at the earliest.

How can we, commoners come together to defeat this nexus ?

How can we coerce ourselves to forget the wounds of the past?

How can we refrain from spreading doubt, fear and hatred?

How can we stop ourselves from being infuriated by the riot mongers?

How can we remind ourselves that our future is more important than our past?

How can we together create an atmosphere conducive for growth and development?

How can we combat the second “C”?

Any ideas?, Any Anna’s ?

Save the entire human race…. Today

In line with all the divine texts revealed over the ages, the last testament-the holy Quran says- if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the whole humanity. (5.32)

I was watching the story of Abu Musa last night on TV. He was 4 years old. His mother was struggling through the endless barren lands of Somalia, laid to waste by the great drought. She had a 2 year old baby in her arms and little Abu Musa wobbling behind her, hanging on to her arms. She squinted her eyes as she stared into the vast expanse of scorching harshness before her- for the relief camps were still days away. She then glanced at the malnourished faces of her dearest ones. As the last droplets of energy dribbled away from her, the emaciated mother took the decision.

She dropped Abu Musa into the hot sand and limped away, hugging on to her baby. The howling wind resisted the boy’s tired whimpers from restraining her. But as she told the interviewer amidst sobs, she had turned back repeatedly, scanning for signs of life in her child. It seems that she saw him quiver at times before he gave himself up to the fangs of hunger and thirst.

Brothers and SistersThere is no doubt.God almighty will hold us responsible for the deaths of Abu Musa and thousands like him. We will all be questioned for our inaction and apathy. Let us do everything possible right away to prevent these unfortunate deaths. I recommend this site- Somalian Crisis. This is a very trustworthy and reputed site which allows you to make contributions online with your credit card. While you can contribute as less as USD 100, kindly note that.

• $71 provides a month’s worth of food packs for a family of eight
• $210 provides a 30-day supply of water for 42 people
• $1,413 supplies essential medicines to a health center serving 80 children

In this holy month, you can ensure that each of your family members can amass the benefits equivalent of saving the whole of the human race. So start with your children and save one Abu Musa each on their behalves.

So stop what you are doing……. And click that link NOW!!!!!!!! and stop one more child from dying.

As the prophet of god confirms “One who advices others to do good, gets the same reward of the one who heeds his advice and does good”. So apart from donating, send this article to all your contacts by sending them this link-Soulversesto them

May god almighty accept all our deeds as righteous ones…………

May Justice Prevail

Back home, the dreaded police department has a simple and straight forward way of solving even the toughest of crimes. They maintain a database of citizens picked up earlier for petty offenses. Whenever law breaking happens, they scout around for some time. If the offenders evade them, VOILA! Out comes the list and some hapless soul is dragged to jail. One more case is solved and the stakeholders bask in the glory of received accolades. And of course, the police have some very creative ways to make these “convicts” confess to these crimes… local imitations of water boarding, electrocution and flogging…. to name a few. I still smile when I think of a old joke which had a couple of police men torturing a bear, trying to make it confess- that it was the infamous tiger that had been venturing on manhunts.

It’s very much like the drunk who was found searching desperately under a lamp post. When enquired, he said that he was searching for his lost bunch of keys. Upon asked whether he had lost the keys at that exact spot, he replied “I lost them somewhere else, but its dark there and well lit here”. One cant but envy those desperadoes who can merrily go scot free after each crime, since the blame will invariably fall on someone else by default. Do anything wicked and forget about it. Someone somewhere will pay for their sins…perfect arrangement.

After the recent bombings in Norway, all the news channels and newspapers were quoting police and intelligence sources unanimously and unequivocally stating that the perpetrators had to be Islamic fundamentalists. They were at the verge of cracking the case and the media was indulging in bouts of verbal diarrhea, explaining Islam’s inclination towards violence and the sinister cold bloodedness of Muslims. Finally it turned out that the man accused of the killing spree was an Islamophobe, deeply influenced by a group of American bloggers and writers who over the years have been desperately trying to “defend the west from Islamic domination”. He was one of the most vociferous supporters of the “Grave danger posed by Muslim immigrants to Western culture” cause.

Thank god Justice prevailed in Norway. And hope it will be repeated in the case of thousands of innocents languishing in jail for crimes they have never committed.
Hope our law enforcers will reexamine and change their paradigms and refrain from jumping into pre conceived conclusions. Hope the Muslim community will work proactively to cleanse itself of the stigma attached to it. Hope it will locate and alienate the few black sheep who believe that killing of innocents will emancipate their brethren from injustice. Those wayward ones who try to serve almighty god by spilling guiltless blood.

And most importantly may the sinister plots of all those ominous invisible hands that are waiting to exploit this situations fail.
May true justice prevail……

Seeking your prayers, as well

The son stood near the impatient taxi, watching the driver stow his luggage away. Evading the frames of his loved ones thronging the verandah to see him off, he looked at the slender frame of his father, leaning uncomfortably on the sofa, mouth agape and eyes blankly staring at nothing….

As the car, painfully strode over the rain filled potholes, with a tired wiper squeaking across the scratch filled windshield, the driver cursed the road and the rain for the hundredth time. The son was silent, trying to fight the tear drops that desperately wanted to reveal themselves. Pain lurched in his chest as he turned back over the shoulder at the slowly receding house…..within which wretched time had moved too quickly, unjustly pushing his hero down an un scalable incline of illness.

Living in the posh comforts of his home in Dubai, he often manages to escape the stabbing memories and the humbling pangs of guilt, the enduring companions of any middle aged expatriate. But his father comes back to haunt his consciousness every now and then…. Especially during supplications after the customary prayers. He would also come in unannounced, led along by the sight of some old book, strains of some ageing song, or the whiff of some fragrance from childhood. Next few minutes would be spent, basking in the memories of those golden days… when he has what he really was.. The Royal Bengal Tiger… as the son jokingly used to address him as…The speaker, the writer, the devotee, the guide, father, friend, Leader… all these roles had to slowly give themselves up one by one…helpless before the onslaught of that invincible neurological tyrant called Parkinsonism.

Even though he had stopped communicating long ago, shades of the tiger would surface occasionally as the son would sit next to him and engage him in a monologue about spirituality and philosophy- his pet topics. Very rarely he would reciprocate as well… gifting the son with priceless moments to cherish and treasure.

Why did time move so fast…. O my god!!!! Why him ????

Trying to break through the familiar stranglehold of pain, nostalgia, fear and guilt, the son whispered again…

At least for one day, my lord, give me back my father of yore
Make his suffering painless
Tell him about the love that I have for him and my constant endeavors to be his shadow..
Give me the strength to continue his good work
May sun set be far far away and may it light this measly candle before …….

Dangerous Viruses of the mind

Had the opportunity to facilitate a session on “Effective Thinking” recently. Had a bash trying to identify common thinking ailments that plague all of us . With gratitude towards the enlightened and enthusiastic set of learners who gave us lot of inputs, let me present the Viruses of our Mind…

Tsunamising:(Making it Huge!!!!!!!)

You have sent your son out to the Grocery. He isn’t back after 4.5 minutes (your eyes never left the clock). You are worried. After 5 minutes you start panicking….. All the worst possible scenarios flood into your mind.

You have sent an email to a close friend who usually reciprocates promptly. Your inbox has being lying barren for two days. You convince yourself that your friend is upset with you and has sworn never to correspond with you. It’s all over…. For now and ever.

That fever that you got recently is definetely a symptom of You know what. Doctors have confirmed otherwise. Buy you know for sure!!!!!

Perfect 10 or none: (It should be Perfect or it shouldn’t be at all)

You want to pray 5 times a day. You missed one. You decide that everything is lost and skip the other ones as well.

You are on a diet and decide to stay away from sweets for dear life. But on a hapless day you have a bite of a very appealing doughnut… and gone. You decide that your diet lies in tatters and you go on to finish the whole box.

You have a small argument with your loved one and lose your cool. That’s it. You decide that the relationship is over and can never be normal again because all relationships have to be perfect.

Nostradamus: (Future telling)

You have been invited for a family get together. You are all set to go. But you see pictures of people making fun of you. That irritating aunt will definitely cold shoulder you. You will end up prodded and poked from all sides. They will all make fun of you………. You can predict the horrendous future perfectly.

You have a presentation to give tomorrow. You are sure that people will be bored. You will get stuck. People will ask questions that will stump you. Your show will be a disaster.

Color Blind (I see only what I want to see)

You decide that Mr. A is against you. You will not see or hear anything good that the person does to you or says good about you. Your antennae will pick up only the not so good things that he has to say or do.

You decide that your husband always stamps the exquisite carpets with his dirty shoes. You don’t notice the million times when he stayed away from it. You catch him red handed (or red legged) only when he is all over the carpet.

Tyrant (There are rules for everything…. they must be followed)

People should respond to me the way I treat them. My son should keep the books the way I want them to be kept. Neighbours shouldn’t have parties. I should always be nice and kind. Husbands shouldn’t disagree with wives in front of kids… You shouldn’t go out for dinner more than once a week……

General (Over Generalizing and all knowing- without any doubt)

Nobody loves me…. All Americans are like this. All children are thankless. Are XX nationalities are like that. I can never do presentations right. I always mess up things. I am hopeless……

Mind Reader (I know why they behave this way)

Mr. X didn’t say hi because he is too proud. Ms. B is not talking to me because Ms. C would have gossiped about me. Mr. H is not helping because he feels threatened. My son doesn’t learn because he is lazy. My wife doesn’t appreciate because she is thankless. Because they have a very poor background, they behave that way………

No Thanks (I am not good)

Someone compliments your looks and you feel-“They are saying that to please me. I am really up to no good”. Someone appreciates a dish that you made and you feel- “The dish is horrible. They are saying that to boost my self esteem”

If you regularly suffer from any of these ailments…. Return to this blog soon. We may have an antidote!!!!!

Belittle your tribulations

Yearning for a problem free and perfect life was one of my favorite past times. To be fair, life hasn’t till date thrown any colossal problems at me.(Thanks to the almighty). But even the slightest tinge of discomfort had the capability to unseat me from my comfort throne and that lack of ease would forever play in my mind like an incessant migraine making me lose hope, happiness and even my disposition which is generally upbeat and enthusiastic.

I have changed a bit recently thanks to the wisdom found in some very inspirational and soul stirring articles that I came across. Now I am able to give my problems the size, position and importance that they deserve and is able to belittle them against the backdrop of this immense blessing called life.

Today, let me try to share with you the very thoughts that cured me of this malaise……Hope they will also help you put things in perspective

Consider these……….

Problems are an indicator of a person’s importance. The higher you climb, bigger and more will be your problems.

Problems are tools by which ordinary people evolve into extra ordinary souls

Take any problem in the world-lack of health, wealth, good looks, connections…. You will find umpteen examples of people who braved and battled these issues and made it really really big. So problems are not excuses to live lives of scarcity. They are opportunities that can lead you to lives of abundance.

Anything bad that happens to you is a substitute for something really worse that could have happened. So be thankful…

Do these……

Ask Him. He Listens…
Turn each anxiety, each fear and each concern into a supplication. Look at it as another reason to submit to the will of the almighty. When you awaken in the morning, thank god for giving you life after that short death called sleep. When you step out of your home, remember him. Start every action with a small prayer. At night, fall asleep with His praises on your lips. Once you have established a plan to deal with a specific issue or problem in your life, put your trust in the most Wise and the All-Knowing.

Remind yourself that human responsibility is limited

While we need to carry out our duty to the best of our abilities, always remember that we don’t control the outcome of events. Once we have done our duty, leave the results to god. Regardless of the results of our efforts, we will be rewarded for the part we have played. We are Not Running the World, God is

Seek help through Patience and Prayer

Patience and prayer are two oft-neglected stress busters. Patience includes self-control, perseverance, endurance, and a focused struggle to achieve one’s goal. Being patient gives us control in situations where we feel we have little or no control. We cannot control what happens to us but we can control our reaction to our circumstances. Patient striving is the essence of Proactiveness.

Connect with our brothers and sisters

We are never alone. We must think of our brothers, talk to them and connect with them. Through our connections, we will break the chain of isolation that leads to depression and anxiety. Pray with other people instead of alone. Praying in congregation is a great morale booster

Pray for Others to Heal Yourself

Praying for others connects you with them and helps you understand their suffering. This in itself has a healing component to it. And whenever we sincerely pray for others, god hears our prayer and blesses both of us.

Whenever a misfortune befalls us say loudly with conviction: ‘Surely we belong to god and to Him shall we return’
God is the only One who gives and it is He alone who takes away. Hence let us be grateful for whatever we receive. Let us also patiently endure during times of turmoil and pain. For everything happens for a reason…. good reason.

It is reported that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “When a son of a servant of Allah dies, Allah Says to the angels, ‘Have you taken the son of My servant?’ They say, ‘Yes.’ Then Allah Says, ‘Have you taken the fruit of his heart?’ They say, ‘Yes.’ Allah Says, “What has My servant said?’ They say, ‘He has praised You and said, Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un (To Allah we belong and to Him is our return). Then Allah Says, ‘Build a house for My servant in Paradise and call it the house of praise.’

May the all powerful god give us the strength to change all that we can change and accept all that we cannot change and give us the wisdom to differentiate between the two………………………

Writing a Love Letter again

There is something very very special about love letters. They both surprise and thrill the recipients. The lucky ones who receive them feel so warm and loved that they can hardly wait to return the love to us. They create a matchless feeling when the reader realizes that we cared enough to take the time to get the stationery, write and post the letter.

Don’t wait for the opportune date and time. Send them every time you can. When someone is packing, hide the letter somewhere- in the pocket, purse or a shoe. Imagine the heart beats of the person when he discovers it… far away from you. Hide your message among the long list of grocery items that your wife has made. She will stand transfixed amidst the other busy shoppers who aren’t as lucky as her. Leave small post it notes with your messages in your child’s lunch box or in one of his books. Each time, they stumble upon one, they will be reminded of how much they are loved and appreciated.

As a bonus, save a copy of your love letters and Iam sure that you will relish reviewing them some day and cherish the memories they evoke.

The most endearing letters are the ones that you can write to our older parents or grandparents living far away from us in the fading twilight of their years. Most of these people do suffer from umpteen diseases. But they almost always also suffer from broken hearts. Most of their friends would have passed on and they have few connections left with the fast and apathetic world around. They may be waking up in the middle of the night feeling totally alienated and depressed and lying awake… waiting for yet another meaningless day.

It is at times like these that they slowly get up and take out that letter that we would have sent months earlier that has already been read a hundred times. They read every word again and get transported to the wonder world where their grand children are playing merrily, where we sit next to them, cuddling them and telling how much we love them. I am sure that our letters would be tear stained, tattered and taped from incessant reading and pondering.

Come…. let’s do it. Don’t worry about syntax and grammar. Our readers don’t care. Just write from your hearts to theirs. They will know what we mean……

Let me write mine……

Dearest Uppa and Umma

From Miles and Miles away, as my family lies sleeping peacefully in the other room, I am writing this letter to tell you once more that I love you more than anyone in this world………………………………..

Greatest success secret of all times

This post is heavily inspired by an article by a brother who prefers to be unnamed. May god almighty accept his inputs and the inspiration it provides as righteous deeds.

“So do not weaken and do not grieve, for you will indeed be superior if you are truly believers.”
[Al-Quran 3:139]

This verse was revealed to prophet Muhammed (PBUH), soon after the believers suffered a stunning defeat in the Battle of Uhud at the hands of the transgressing tribes of Makkah . It was revealed as an encouragement and reminder to the defeated pious. As a student of Self Improvement and actualization, I see it as the greatest success secret of all times.

This is what Umar bin Al-Khattab (RA) had to remind Saad bin Abi Waqqas (RA) before the battle of Qadisiyyah- “Fear your sins more than you fear the enemy as your sins are more dangerous to you than your enemy. We believers are only victorious over our enemy because their sins outnumber ours, not for any other reason. If our sins were equal to those of our enemy, then they would defeat us due to their superior numbers and resources.”

Let us restate the obvious here. Victory and defeat, gains and losses, and successes and setbacks are not decided by money, resources, numbers or skills. Rather, they are decided by the degree of obedience that we show to the will of the almighty. The more we obey him, both individually and collectively, the more we hasten His Victory. The more we disobey him, the more we delay the arrival of His Victory. The sin of just one of us can delay victory for the entire community. It is very easy to blame external factors for all the injustice happening around us. It has become our second nature to blame “them” for our woes and worries. But the truth is that we have only ourselves to blame.

Look at us and our pathetic state. We have abandoned prayer. We are too stingy to give even obligatory charity. We prefer to go on holidays than on pilgrimages. We drink alcohol, we use and supply drugs ,we cohabit outside wedlock, we steal, we lie, we cheat. We are quick to spend on fashion and luxuries but slow to spend on orphans and the needy. We fail to utter a single word, let alone raise a finger, when we see our fellow beings being tyrannized. We waste our lives watching television and clicking “I like” icons on Facebook. We are too busy to fulfill our responsibilities as vicegerents of almighty god on Earth. And after all this (and more), we have the audacity to wonder why justice and truth doesn’t win over aggression and evil.

Every sin we commit delays the arrival of Victory of truth over falsehood, good over evil. Every prayer we delay extends the agony of an innocent somewhere. Every drug we take allows another sister or daughter to be brutally dishonored. Every hour we waste allows the poor and needy to be exploited more. Every time we even gaze at something forbidden, we place an obstacle in the path of victory of good over evil. Let us understand this clearly. A sin is not a ‘private matter between us and god’ but one sin can make the difference between victory and defeat for Truth and Justice.

Le us remember God’s Promise: “So do not weaken and do not grieve, for you will indeed be superior if you are truly believers.” He promises relief, assistance, superiority and victory on the condition that we are true believers. If untruth and evil prevails today, it is not because God has gone back on his promise, it’s simply because we have ceased to be believers.

Time to review our Goals Folks……

With the rapidity of the tsunami that ruthlessly swept across Japan, or the briskness of Osama Bin Laden’s burial at sea (according to Islamic rights) or the fleetness of the waves of protests sweeping across the Middle East, the better (or bitter) half of 2011 has already passed us by. So it would be a grand time to reflect back on the magnificent goals that we had all set either in those dusky evenings of 2010 or in those wee hours of 2011.

If you were among the privileged few who didn’t have any Goals for the year 2011… that’s fine. Please go ahead and celebrate. If you didn’t have anywhere to go, any road will take you there. So Congrats! And may you keep winning year after year.

Hope my sarcasm doesn’t trickle down to this paragraph. This is for the focused ones. All those of you who had goals with clear milestones and have reached where you wanted to… Super Mabrook. You are in that exclusive 3% of the world who set goals and really manage to get them. We would love to hear your success stories. Go ahead, blow your bugles. We will post them on this blog. If professional goals have also been humbled, you can use this opportunity to let your bosses know about your indispensability. Just a tiny doubt….. Were your goals really challenging ones? Did they stretch you well enough? Did you experience that overwhelming feeling of actualization and achievement when you realized it? Did you feel proud of the rungs conquered and heights achieved? If yes, then super duper mabrook. The problem with most of us is not that we set high goals and fail to reach them, but is that we set such low goals and achieve them tooooooooooooo easily. Hope you are exceptions to this.

For all those who had set goals and failed to achieve them…. Let us do some introspection together. Let us help each other to learn the reasons why goals are so often abandoned by the waysides of life.

Please choose the apt reason by clicking the link below. Thanks in Advance. Do share this link with your friends (Let us be better informed before we prescribe antidotes…)

Didnt realise my goals because….
